Attending a Workshop

When you attend one of our Investigations Workshops, come prepared for a fun- and work-filled week. You will think about mathematics ideas, solve problems in ways that are probably different from how you learned to solve problems, listen to others’ ideas and strategies, and focus on one Investigations book at your grade level.

The workshop days are divided into two sessions in the morning and one session in the afternoon. The morning sessions are mixed grade level groups while the afternoon sessions are grade level specific.

Come prepared to be a learner. Regardless of your role—teacher, leader or administrator—take advantage of the week and participate: ask questions, share with your group, listen to others. The hands-on sessions and group activities will enable you to be active.

Take care of yourself. Too much sitting time? Get up for a few minutes. While the activities are engaging, some participants find it hard to sit. Do what you need to be comfortable. Talk to the facilitators if you have any requests or questions.

There will be homework each night. The readings are not long and they are relevant to the work of the week.

The workshop might not feel quite right until about Wednesday, but then it will! On the first two days, you will go through the sessions, and likely wonder where and how any of it is going to help you in your teaching. But it will start to come together and by the end of the week, you will have new understandings, some new strategies to add to your current ones, and an idea about how your students are making sense of the mathematics, how to help them become more efficient, and how to reach the range of learners.
